HELMUT NEWTON AT TOPSHOP!

female fashion model posing in front of a mirror and operating a camera and photo studio lights herself by remote trigger •  Helmut Newton At TopShop! – TopShop toured an instant photography installation called The Newton Machine round some of its stores earlier this month. Named after the late Helmut Newton, TopShop's Newton Machine was an installation of a self-photography solution inspired by this celebrated photographer. Newton was dismissive of other photographers whose reputations he believed were based mainly on the qualities of the model they partnered with. He thought the model was effectively the better photographer! He devised a set-up that allowed a model to photograph herself. This is what TopShop replicated in-store for its customers this month, in London, Manchester and Dublin. [expand story >>>]

ANNIE LEIBOVITZ -Life Through a Lens

Annie Leibovitz, photographer - portrait, head and shoulders, detail from an image by Albert Domasin •  Annie Leibovitz – Life Through A Lens! – Last week BBC One screened the one-hour biopic Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens. If you missed it, today is your last chance to watch it on the BBCi Player!

Life Through A Lens was screened as one of BBC One's Imagine series of programmes, presented by Alan Yentob. The film-maker was Leibovitz's own sister, Barbera. Her film traces Anna-Lou's progress from art school to Rolling Stone, and then to Vanity Fair and later Vogue. It shows her gradual development from fly-on-the-wall rock photography to elaborately staged celebrity portraits assisted by large crews.

MITSUBISHI PRINTERS GET VISTA DRIVERS!

graphic of Windows VISTA logo superimposed on a group of Mitsubishi printers to represent compatibility • Mitsubishi Printers Get Vista Drivers! Mitsubishi Electric have now released Vista drivers for their range of professional dye sub photo printers. There are drivers available for download for the CP9550DW, CP9800DW and CP3800DW. (Click the links to download the drivers.)

Windows Vista now supports 77,000 printers, but many photographers have been clobbered by the Microsoft OS's lack of support for professional dye subs. Photo printer manufacturers have been slow to develop Vista drivers for these. Photographers sometimes first learn this when they buy a Vista laptop and find they can't get their dye sub to work with it!

GREEN AND YELLOW GIANTS RAISE PRICES!

Kodak and Fujifilm depicted as a pair of sumo wrestlers, yellow and green respectively, with Kodak having the head of Uncle Sam •  Green & Yellow giants Raise Prices! – The two surviving giants of the traditional photo industry, Fujifilm and Kodak, have both announced massive global price hikes in film and paper. The increases are blamed on factors including global commodities costs – particularly of oil, but also of silver. They become effective by July this year.

Photographers and photo labs are facing a double whammy: not only are analogue materials going up, but most manufacturers' synthetic papers have gone up too. These are used in dye sub printers, photo kiosks and booths, and in ID photo systems. Even the cost of inkjet inks is going up! The increases are as high as an eye-watering twenty per cent in some cases! In the UK these rises can be exacerbated by the weakness of the pound against the euro, which adds to the cost of transferring continental stocks into this country.
